Sexy Combo – a jQuery Plugin
February 25th, 2009 - Frontend, jQuery
“Sexy Combo is a jQuery plugin that allows you to turn default browser selectboxes into much more attractive and usable comboboxes. The user can choose whether to select option from the dropdown list or just type it. This widget reaches its maximum efficiency when we have selectboxes with lots of options (e.g. countries or states), so it would be difficult for users to find option in the huge list.”
You can have a look at the demo page and see what Sexy Combo looks like.

Really? Is it just me or do most browsers have more usable select boxes already. Especially that conventions have already been set. E.g, open one of the select boxes, choose something; realise you made a mistake and click the open thing again…WTF there’s only the option you’ve already selected. *10 seconds later* oh… it’s not a select box but an overly complicated auto-completion box. This is not a combo or select box, this is auto completion.
Sexy? In IE6 maybe, try looking at it on a mac in FF3 or Safari, they stand out like sore thumbs, the browser has access to native styled controls… and uses them.
Making custom selects is a nice experiment, but to use them has to be done very carefully.
